As Robert Burns poem, To a Mouse, reminds us, “The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men / Gang aft agley.” (“The best laid schemes of mice and men / Often go awry.”) Anyone who has ever suffered a great loss knows well the depths of despair and anguish that arise from such an experience, all about pain, suffering and loss. Yet, like the phoenix, out of that, hopefully, we emerge more than we were when we started.
In the 1500s, Saint John of the Cross wrote about this phenomena, known as the Dark Night of the Soul and, more specifically, the Dark Night of the Spirit. Hindus call this same process Vedanta, based upon the sacred scriptures of India, the Vedas. And Buddhism talks about following the Path to Enlightenment. The journey referred to in each of these instances is one and the same; it is non-denominational and universal in its scope. This is the Zero’s Journey.
If you are facing struggles and loss of your own and would like to learn more about The Zero’s Journey itself or would be interested in exercises you can do to maximize your spiritual transformation from this process, i would recommend these two books:
